A lot of fall risk is just darkness. The single bulb over the vanity that leaves the shower in shadow. The hallway with no light at night. The glossy tile that glares. Seniors need more light than younger eyes — and the bathroom is where poor lighting meets water and hard surfaces.
What good bathroom lighting looks like
Bright and even: enough light that the whole room — shower included — has no dark corners. Glare-free: frosted fixtures and matte finishes instead of bare bulbs bouncing off tile. Layered: overhead light for the room, vanity light for the mirror, and a low nightlight for after dark. Simple controls: rocker switches or motion sensors instead of tiny toggles — and switches placed where you can reach them without crossing a dark room.
The 2 a.m. problem
Nighttime bathroom trips are a top fall scenario: dark, urgent, groggy. A warm motion-sensor nightlight in the bathroom (and one in the hallway) fixes it for a few dollars — no wiring needed for plug-in models. We include nightlight placement in every free safety visit because it is the cheapest safety upgrade in the house.
Often bundled, rarely noticed
Lighting upgrades pair naturally with any remodel — full safety remodels always include a lighting plan. But we also do lighting-only visits: new fixtures, better switches, nightlights placed right. Small job, and your eyes will thank you every morning.
