Standard toilets are 15 inches tall. Comfort-height (often called chair-height) models are 17 to 19 inches — about the height of a dining chair. Two inches sounds small until you have watched someone with new knees try to stand up from a low toilet. Then it sounds like everything.
Who feels the difference
Anyone with knee or hip arthritis, recent joint replacement, back trouble, or simply weakening leg strength. If rising from the toilet has become a two-hands-on-the-vanity operation, a taller toilet plus a grab bar beside it changes the whole equation.
What to know before you buy one yourself
Not everyone wants taller. Shorter adults and anyone with certain circulation issues sometimes prefer standard height with a raised seat instead. And "comfort height" varies by brand — we bring a tape measure to the visit and match the height to the person, not the catalog. Pair it with the right bars and the bathroom's hardest transition gets easy.
Quick job, big daily payoff
A toilet swap is usually a half-day job: out with the old, in with the new, new wax ring and supply line, everything sealed and tested. It is one of the smallest projects we do and one of the most thanked-for. If the whole bathroom needs rethinking, see our full safety remodels.
