If you served, the VA has programs that may help pay for exactly the work we do — grab bars, walk-in showers, doorway widening, and more. Too many veterans never hear about them. Here is a plain-English map; the VA makes the final call on every application.
Programs to know about
HISA grants (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) can help pay for medically necessary home modifications for veterans with service-connected conditions — and in some cases for non-service-connected conditions too. Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants are larger grants for veterans with specific severe service-connected disabilities, usable for major adaptations including bathrooms. The Veteran-Directed Care program can sometimes fund home safety through a different door. Amounts, rules, and wait times change — treat anything you read online (including here) as a starting point, not gospel.
How to start
Contact your VA primary care team or a VA social worker and say you need a home safety evaluation. An occupational therapist visit often comes first — their recommendations carry weight in applications. Your county veteran service office (every Florida county has one) helps with paperwork for free. Start there, not with a contractor.
What we do on our end
Once you know what you are approved for, we document our work the way claims need: itemized written estimates, before-and-after photos, and detailed invoices. We have worked with veteran families across Florida — including Jacksonville near the naval bases — and we know the drill. But the application is yours; we do bathrooms, not benefits paperwork.
Ready for a safer bathroom?
Call (407) 434-9297 or send the form. Ask us about bathroom work that fits your VA benefits — the safety visit and the written price are free, and there is never any pressure.
