Safety upgrades range from a few hundred dollars (grab bars) to a full remodel. Whatever your project costs, it helps to know the payment paths before you start. Here they are, from simplest to most involved.
Common paths
Savings, staged over time. The most common approach: do the highest-risk fixes first (bars, floor), the bigger projects later. Our free visit prioritizes by risk so staging makes sense. Home equity. HELOCs and home equity loans are how many seniors fund full remodels — talk to your bank or credit union about current terms; we are not lenders and will not pretend to advise you. VA programs. Qualifying veterans should read our VA benefits guide — real money exists here. Medicaid waivers. Florida programs for qualifying low-income seniors can cover modifications; contact your Area Agency on Aging. Nonprofits. Rebuilding Together chapters and similar groups help seniors in need — worth a call if money is tight.
What to watch out for
Be wary of contractors offering "easy financing" with pressure to sign today — compare the loan terms independently, the same way you would any loan. Never sign a blank or incomplete contract. And be skeptical of anyone promising that "insurance will cover it" — see our Medicare guide for the straight story.
Start small if you must
A fall costs more than any remodel — the ER visit, the rehab, the lost independence. If the full project has to wait, do the cheap high-impact items now: bars, nightlights, a handheld head. Safety is not all-or-nothing.
