Aging in place is a plan, not a hope — and the bathroom is where the plan gets tested daily. Use this checklist to assess any bathroom honestly. Check the boxes that apply, then fix in the order listed: the earlier items prevent the worse falls.
Entry and doorway
☐ Doorway fits a walker or wheelchair (32"+ clear) — if not, see doorway widening. ☐ No raised threshold to trip on. ☐ Hallway nightlight for nighttime trips. ☐ Door handle is a lever, not a knob (easier with arthritis).
Floor
☐ Floor grips when wet — test it honestly. ☐ No loose rugs or mats. ☐ Path from shower to door is clear and uncluttered.
Tub / shower
☐ Entry is low or zero-step — no climbing over a tub wall (see walk-in tubs or conversions). ☐ Grab bars at entry and inside, anchored to studs. ☐ Seat available for tired days. ☐ Handheld showerhead on a slide bar. ☐ Anti-scald valve set to 120°F or lower.
Toilet
☐ Comfort height — feet flat, easy to rise. ☐ Grab bar or rail beside it. ☐ Paper and essentials within reach, no twisting.
Light and air
☐ Bright, even, glare-free light — no dark corners. ☐ Nightlight for after dark. ☐ Ventilation fan that actually runs (Florida humidity + poor venting = mold).
